Pablo Roberto Arenas Fuentes

Biologist (1976) from the National Autonomous University of Mexico –UNAM-. Sciences Master also from UNAM in 1978 in Natural Resources Management and Population Ecology. Ph D. in Fisheries Management and Conservation in 1988 from the University of Washington, Seattle, USA.
He began his professional carrier at the National Fisheries Institute (INAPESCA) in 1977.
He has over 30 years of national and international experience on management and assessment of fishery resources and in general on natural resources conservation, population dynamics with analytical approaches, coordinating research, sustainable development and policy on industrial and artisanal
fisheries; experience that has allowed him to represent Mexico in many fora to promote international agreements for the management, conservation and sustainable development in fisheries, marine mammals and sea turtles issues.
He was Principal Scientist and Principal Researcher at the Inter-American Tropical Tuna Commisión (IATTC), in La Jolla, Ca, USA where he worked 18 years; Coordinator and ecological-fishing activities analyst on climate change at NOAA (Administration Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration) in
Washington, D.C.; Coordinator of the Mexico-United States Joint Programme on Assessment of Pacific Small Pelagics; and before working for INAPESCA, he held briefly the position of Coordinator of the Gulf of California and the North Pacific TNC (The Nature Conservancy) Marine Initiative.
He has been Director and thesis advisor of Bachelor, Master and Doctorate students at UNAM, CICIMAR and CICESE.
He is a member of professional associations, technical groups and editorial boards and has more than 50 scientific and technical publications on fisheries, ecology and conservation.
At the National Fisheries Institute, served as General Director of Research Assessment and Management of Fisheries Resources from 1995 to 2000, where he was responsible for strategies for the tuna embargo resolution (tuna-dolphin issues); Coordinator of the first National Fisheries Charter and the book & Sustainability and Responsible Fisheries in Mexico & as well as of conservation strategies for fisheries, marine mammals and sea turtles.
Dr. Arenas has received several awards throughout his career, notably the & National Award in Marine Ecology and Conservation" that he received in 1988.
He is General Director of the National Fisheries Institute since January 16 Th 2015
